Summary
The evaluation of neuro-ophthalmic disorders has long been based on detailed history taking combined with thorough physical examination (including pupillary examination and funduscopy), psychophysical testing (including manual and automated visual field testing) and, when appropriate, neuro-imaging. As our knowledge of the pathophysiology of disease processes has expanded, so has our technology. Advances in technology have resulted in the development of multiple ancillary testing modalities useful in the diagnosis and management of neuro-ophthalmic conditions. Equally important, recent technological advances allow the neuro-ophthalmologist to distinguish optic nerve pathology from occult retinal pathology in patients with visual loss of unknown etiology. Finally, ancillary testing can be helpful in supporting a diagnosis of nonorganic visual loss. This module describes the ancillary testing modalities used in neuro-ophthalmology with a focus on optical coherence tomography (OCT) and electrophysiological testing. Ancillary tests are divided into those providing information about structure (OCT, B-scan ultrasonography, fluorescein angiography, and fundus autofluorescence) and those measuring function directly (electrophysiology)
