Summary
"In 1644, the English Civil War is at its height and the very existence of the monarchy is under threat. King Charles I continues to defy Parliament and declares war on half of his people. But he hadn't reckoned on the strength of the New Model Army and its charismatic leader Oliver Cromwell. The New Model Army was England's first truly professional fighting force, properly paid and equipped by Parliament, its officers chosen on merit rather than social rank. The army proved to be a decisive weapon in Parliament's struggle with the King by defeating him in battle. Parliament took things even further by finding King Charles I guilty of high treason and signing his death warrant: a course of action which no-one before had ever thought possible. But Parliament's first problem was that in killing one King, they'd created another, King Charles's son, Charles Prince of Wales, who had escaped into exile after the royalist defeat, but would one day seek revenge for his father's execution. How had this come about and what kind of future lay in store for a country that had decided it had no need of the monarchy at all? How could Oliver Cromwell possibly replace a King? " -- website
