Summary
Retinal detachments can be classified as tractional, exudative, rhegmatogenous and combined. With modern vitrectomy techniques and scleral buckle techniques, approximately 90 percent of all retinal detachments can be repaired. In some cases, office-based procedures are possible. This module focuses on the repair of rhegmatogenous detachments, the most common type of detachment. This module covers pathophysiology; principles of retinal detachment repair; surrounding retinal breaks with effective retinopexy; using vitrectomy in selected cases; alternative techniques; success rate of retinal detachment repair; timing of intervention; advances in surgical instrumentation and trends
