Summary
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis is the most frequent opportunistic ocular infection occurring in immunosuppressed individuals. In advanced cases, CMV retinitis can progress to papillitis, retinal necrosis, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, and irreversible blindness. With highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) treatment with more than two antiretroviral drugs, one a reverse transcriptase inhibitor or protease inhibitor, the incidence of CMV retinitis has dropped significantly, however, ophthalmologists are making clinical decisions over a longer period. This module reviews the characteristics of patient populations at risk for CMV; symptoms; ancillary testing assessment; and currently used pharmaceutical agents, their side effects, and requisite testing when a patient is on each medication
