Summary
Refractive surgery is one of the most commonly performed ophthalmic elective procedures. In the last decade, laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) became the most frequently performed refractive surgery. Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and advanced surface ablation procedures due to the elimination of flap complications, improved understanding of epithelial healing and a reduced potential to cause postoperative corneal ectasia. This module reviews innovations in advanced surface ablation, including a focus on why surface treatment might be preferred over LASIK in some cases, and mandatory in others. It covers patient selection, preoperative assessment, refractive surgical procedures, postoperative management, wavefront-guided excimer ablation, surface ablation vs. LASIK, and complications. This online module also includes tables, images and three surgical videos
