Summary
As the early June sun begins to set over a calm river in Central Hungary, masses of ghostly shapes emerge from their larval cases to take to the air for the fi rst time. They are mayfl ies (Europe{u2019}s biggest species) and in a spectacular display, thousands of them show us how the very fi rst wings to evolve were used. From the stunning aerobatics of hoverfl ies in an English garden to the mass migration of purple Crow butterfl ies in the valleys of Taiwan this episode tells the tale of the fi rst animals ever to take to the air. On the way we have unique footage that reveals the lightning fast reaction of bluebottles and hoverfl ies, fi lmed with one of the world{u2019}s fastest cameras, and David handles the world{u2019}s largest (and perhaps most ferocious) insect {u2013} the Titan beetle
