Summary
"In 1940, the decision was reached to create a separate state and nation for India's Muslim population. The Kashmir question remains the unresolved legacy of the 1947 partition of India, and the principal obstacle to peace in South Asia. Pakistan's first decade 1948-1958, witnessed the crumbling of its founding father Jinnah's vision of democracy. This documentary traces the establishment of Pakistan, and looks at the history of Pakistan and her many military rulers. It uncovers five major fault lines in Pakistan's body politic, and evaluates the status of the military; militant Islamic groups; democratic forces; and the relationship with the United States, India, and with Pakistan's Muslim neighbours. In 1978 the CIA became interested in Afghanistan when the king was overthrown, and communist elements began to take control. This interest deepened after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. The CIA assisted Mujahideen fighters to resist the Soviet invasion. Americans did not directly train Afghanis. They trained Pakistanis to train Afghanis. Modern-day jihadis were created with the help of Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Yemen, and, according to the CIA, 70 countries sent their men to become jihadis. The Saudis provided money and US provided technology. The US was reluctant to give arms directly to Afghans, but they fought the war with Soviets by giving Pakistan military assistance.
