Summary
  • A documentary on the genocide of more than two million Cambodians, between 1975 and 1978; and the man behind the atrocities. The story began in March 1974, when the Khmer Rouge took over the old capital Odongk. Cambodia was closed to the world, then; and no true record was filmed of Pol Pot's new society. The Khmer rouge systematically destroyed all symbols which represented the modern and civilised world. They used hunger and terror to control every aspect of the population's lives. Opponents of the ultimate aim of restoring Cambodia's greatness were deemed enemies of the state and dealt with accordingly
  • Draws on Pol Pot's own words, the testimony of those who knew him well and survivor accounts, to tell the story of his journey to the killing fields. In an interview, in 1997, shortly before his death, Pol Pot spoke of the revolution and of his childhood. Includes selected archival footage of the key events of those years. Includes also, interviews with Party leaders, Khmer Rouge commanders, and Phnom Pen residents, who gave eyewitness accounts of life under the regime
