Summary
Pterygium is a degeneration of the conjunctiva that causes a fibrovascular extension of the bulbar conjunctiva and Tenon's layer onto the cornea, usually from the nasal interpalpebral area, in an arrowhead or wing-shaped configuration. It may progress slowly towards the visual axis. This module summarizes the current state-of-the-art in the surgical management of pterygium and further reviews a promising surgical approach to resolving three important issues with respect to pterygium removal: recurrence, cosmesis and safety
