Summary
This challenging study of Hardy's fiction eschews traditional critical approaches by concentrating on six novels consistently marginalised and undervalued in standard commentaries on his work. Focusing on his female characters, and drawing on aspects of Foucauldian feminist theory, Jane Thomas offers new and detailed readings of Desperate Remedies, A Pair of Blue Eyes, The Hand of Ethelberta, A Laodicean, Two on a Tower and The Well-Beloved which demonstrate that Hardy's insight into the shaping force of the discourses of gender and sexuality on feminine selfhood is fundamental to his entire fictional oeuvre. Thomas also reveals how his poignant concern for the resistant or rebellious female subject at a time of social crisis and change demonstrates the 'engaged' rather than the 'pessimistic' nature of Hardy's vision
