Summary
This is the fourth and final report of the Victorian Aboriginal Child Mortality Study (VACMS), a six year study on measurement issues in birth and mortality data. This report provides mortality data for 1999-2008 - the first time that post-neonatal infant and child mortality rates have been reported for Aboriginal children in the state. The report also compares mortality patterns and causal factors between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal infants, over their first 12 months and to the age of 11 years. The study reveals that the gap in the Aboriginal infant mortality rate in Victoria is higher than first thought - while the gap in Aboriginal mortality in the first 28 days is closing, there has been no significant change in the rate of deaths for mortality in the first year of life. The study also finds that the previous estimate of the number of births in Victoria to parents who identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander should be increased by between 87-120%
