Summary
The assessment of the infant with poor vision may be very straightforward because the disease process is apparent: congenital cataracts, aniridia, OCA1A, microphthalmia, chorioretinal or optic nerve colobomas, severe ONH, cicatricial retinopathy of prematurity, or toxoplasmosis scars in the macula. However, many infants with visual impairment may not present with obvious disease features. Making the accurate diagnosis requires targeted history taking, assessment for the presence or absence of nystagmus and the quality of the pupillary light responses, and a careful examination of the retina and optic nerve. Neuroimaging and ERG testing may be required to confirm the diagnosis. -- publisher supplied
