- In the adult, aphakia is typically the result of surgical intervention and, less commonly, trauma. In either case, the aphakic patient faces multiple issues, the most important of which is visual rehabilitation. Spectacle and contact lens correction were historical options. Nearly all aphakic patients today, however, opt for intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. This module discusses the various surgical methods for the visual rehabilitation of the aphakic patient. It examines the current clinical role of sutured PCIOL implantation and also outlines the advantages and disadvantages of iris-sutured and transsclerally sutured PCIOL implantation
