- An epiretinal membrane (ERM), or macular pucker has been referred to by many names. Many of these terms are clinical or anatomic descriptions of retinal findings produced by ERMs of varying degrees of severity. Although why ERMs form is not known with certainty, microscopic trauma has been suggested as the underlying cause. ERM is seen most commonly in older people. It affects approximately 2 percent of people under 60 years of age, but up to 20 percent of those over 70 years old. ERMs often do not cause symptoms that require surgical intervention, but when a significant decline in visual function does occur, improved vitreoretinal surgical techniques can safely and effectively address this condition. This module provides two surgical videos and discusses the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment options for ERM
