- Ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeons rely heavily on implants of many classes, including autogenous tissue, allogeneic implants (from human donors), alloplastic implants (inorganic), and xenografts (donor tissue from other species). Learn about the ever-increasing selection of ophthalmic implants and how they are used in the periocular and orbital region. Implants can be used for modification of orbital volume, repair or augmentation of the bony orbit, nasolacrimal system implantation and grafting, expansion of conjunctival surface area, restoration of normal eyelid position, and cosmetic enhancement of the periocular region. (Discussion of the latter is beyond the scope of this module
