- Among practicing ophthalmologists, the presence of a melanotic or an amelanotic lesion in the fundus is often a cause for concern and prompts referral to a retinal specialist or ocular oncologist. Most often, however, the referring physician can manage these lesions effectively if there is awareness of the lesion features that should prompt earlier referral versus observation
